Blender 3D is a powerful and versatile open-source 3D modeling software that offers a wide range of features for creating stunning visual art, animations, and interactive 3D applications. If you're new to 3D modeling, starting with a low-poly project is a great way to familiarize yourself with Blender's interface and tools. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of modeling a low-poly sword and a simple environment.

Getting Started with Blender

First, download and install Blender from the official website. Once installed, open Blender and you'll be greeted with the default startup file, which includes a basic scene with a cube, a camera, and a light. We'll start by creating our sword model.

Step 1: Setting Up the Workspace

Before we dive into modeling, let's set up our workspace. Blender's interface can be customized, but for this project, we'll stick with the default layout. Ensure you have the following panels visible: 3D Viewport, Outliner, Properties, and Timeline.

Step 2: Modeling the Sword Blade

  1. Delete the Default Cube: Select the cube by right-clicking it and press X to delete it.

  2. Add a New Cube: Press Shift + A to bring up the Add menu, then select Mesh > Cube. This cube will be the base of our sword blade.

  3. Scale the Cube: Press S to scale the cube. Scale it along the Z-axis to make it long and thin, resembling a sword blade. Press S, then Z, and move the mouse to adjust the length. Confirm by left-clicking.

  4. Enter Edit Mode: Press Tab to switch to Edit Mode. Here, we can manipulate the vertices, edges, and faces of our mesh.

  5. Add Edge Loops: To shape the blade, we'll add some edge loops. Press Ctrl + R to add a loop cut, then left-click to confirm its position. Add a few edge loops along the blade to create the basic shape.

  6. Shape the Blade: Select the top vertices and use the G key to move them, creating a pointy end for the blade. Adjust the edge loops to taper the blade towards the tip.

Step 3: Creating the Sword Handle

  1. Add a Cylinder: Press Shift + A and select Mesh > Cylinder. This will be the handle of our sword. Scale it down and position it at the base of the blade.

  2. Edit the Handle: Enter Edit Mode (Tab) and use the scaling (S) and grabbing (G) tools to shape the handle. You can also add edge loops (Ctrl + R) to add details like grips or pommel.

Step 4: Adding the Guard

  1. Add Another Cube: Press Shift + A and add a cube for the guard. Scale it along the X-axis to make it long and thin.

  2. Position and Shape the Guard: Move the guard to sit between the blade and the handle. Use the Edit Mode tools to adjust its shape, making it slightly curved or adding details as you prefer.

Step 5: Finalizing the Sword Model

  1. Join the Parts: In Object Mode, select all the parts of the sword (blade, handle, and guard) by holding Shift and right-clicking each part. Press Ctrl + J to join them into a single object.

  2. Smooth the Model: With the sword selected, go to the Object Data Properties panel and enable Auto Smooth under the Normals section. This will give your low-poly model a cleaner look.

Step 6: Modeling the Environment

Now that our sword is complete, let's create a simple environment.

  1. Add a Plane: Press Shift + A and select Mesh > Plane. This will be the ground of our environment. Scale it up to cover a large area.

  2. Add Trees: For a low-poly look, we'll use simple shapes. Add a cylinder for the trunk and a cone for the foliage. Position and scale them to create a tree. Duplicate the tree (Shift + D) to create more trees and arrange them around the plane.

  3. Add Rocks: Use cubes and scale them irregularly to create low-poly rocks. Scatter them around the environment for added detail.

Step 7: Adding Materials and Colors

  1. Select the Sword: With the sword selected, go to the Materials tab in the Properties panel. Click New to create a new material.

  2. Assign Colors: For a low-poly look, simple solid colors work best. Choose a metallic color for the blade, a brown color for the handle, and a contrasting color for the guard.

  3. Apply Materials to the Environment: Similarly, create materials for the ground, trees, and rocks. Use green for the tree foliage, brown for the trunks, gray for the rocks, and a natural color for the ground.

Step 8: Lighting and Rendering

  1. Add a Sun Lamp: Press Shift + A and select Light > Sun. Position and rotate the sun lamp to create interesting shadows in your scene.

  2. Adjust the World Settings: In the World tab of the Properties panel, adjust the background color to a light blue to simulate the sky.

  3. Render the Scene: Press F12 to render your scene. Blender will generate an image of your low-poly sword and environment.
